In October of this year I attended the “Speech Retreat” conference given and created by Speech Time Fun, The Dabbling Speechie, Natalie Snyders SLP, and The Speech Bubble SLP. This collaborative team came up with a one-day conference focusing on: “everything you will need to have a fantastic and successful year (data collection, organization, progress monitoring, mixed groups, hands on therapy ideas, and more!) “ (Quote taken from the registration description).
I found it to be wildly motivating and yet utterly relaxing at the same time. My girlfriends (also speech therapists) and I originally used this conference as our first excursion away from the kiddos and away from reality. It was so much more! Let me explain why this retreat is a MUST adventure for all school-based SLPs. It is sure to become your next bucket list item.
Heart: “Write it on you heart that every day is the best day in the year.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
I am lucky enough to have two best friends (let’s call them Cay and Nicky) that share the same passion for helping people. Our hearts genuinely care about all the kids and young adults that we service. The four ladies that put this conference on have giving hearts as well. They not only love the children and young adults they service, but they also have love for fellow colleagues and the speech pathology profession. They encourage group selfies and connecting via social media. Collaboration and team building are touched upon continuously throughout the conference. They spread their love and enthusiasm infectiously- making themselves available to all. Giving and loving hearts indeed!
Mind: “There are no constraints on the human mind, no walls around the human spirit, no barriers to our progress except those we ourselves erect.” – Ronald Reagan
These ladies have dedicated their careers creating personalized tools and materials to help better service their students. They create products that are functional and engaging. At the conference they share many different ways to reach various populations of students. The variety of options and enthusiasm they share just gets your creative juices flowing without overwhelming you to the point of tears. Motivational and inspirational to say the least!
Soul: “Every moment and every event of every man’s life on earth plants something in his soul.” –Thomas Merton
Enriching the soul (especially a soul with a full caseload and months of Medicaid billing to be done)- can be difficult. Sometimes finding ways to enrich your soul seems like another task on your to-do list. Take it from me… your soul needs a moment to breath too. This retreat challenges the way you think, engages your mind, and enhances your ideas. Whether we are at the beginning of a chapter in our career, or in the middle or end, this conference speaks to all in an inspirational way. It is literally food for the speech therapist’s soul.
So, for whatever you are yearning for- growth in heart, mind, and/or soul, give the Speech Retreat a try. You won’t regret it.
